Hi! from new member

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Why aren't you going to let them continue to run around when it gets cold?
I would love them to continue to run around when it gets cold. We have a lot of bushes and trees they can go under. But we have seen a Cooper's hawk in / flying over our backyard a couple of times - mostly during the cold weather. We have a run for them, but we are thinking of making a longer one that goes around the yard.

Buff Orps and Rhode Island Reds are great birds. I had one of each in my original four, and the Orp, Honey, is still with me.

There's so much to learn when you're starting out, and as you already know, this is a great place to exchange information, gain new perspectives and just plain have fun.

It's good to meet you!
Hi Callender Girl, Good to meet you too! We were given the chickens as a gift. It was just confirmed that the Rhode Island Red is a rooster. It's not been annoying the hens, but we can't keep it in our city, unfortunately. We're in southwest Iowa. I have tried looking for places take roosters, and even called some farms but didn't have much luck. It's a shame.

Sorry to hear about the rooster! Des Moines isn't very close to southwest Iowa (I grew up in Albia in south central Iowa), but I know the Animal Rescue League there sometimes posts that it has roosters available for adoption. Maybe?
Thank you. We gave some of the other roosters to Animal Rescue League. They are wonderful.
