Hi everyone! I'm new to BYC (just signed up a few minutes ago) and my name is Sunny. My husband, Steve, and I are from the Bay Area in CA but currently live in Reno, NV. We are very recent empty nesters, except for the animals. We have 2 dogs, 1 bunny, 5 large pond fish and, of course, the chickens...
I have 4 Buff Orpingtons, 7 Rhode Island... (4 reds and 3 sex link crosses), 4 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 3 Cukoo Marans (love the dark brown eggs with freckles, sooo cute!) and 2 Golden Lakenvelders (pretty hens but a little nervous). My pullets are between 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 months old and all are laying now. The eggs are still small because they just started laying about three weeks ago (my Rhode Island Reds just stated laying this week), but I am so proud, and excited that we are finally getting eggs!
I've raised chickens several times before but this is my Hubby's first time. He loves the fresh eggs! We have no cockerels because we live in town but I'm happy that Reno has no objections to chickens as long as we keep them on our property. We are already getting too many eggs for us and our loved ones to use up (11-13 a day), so we have started selling to a few people at our jobs.
For the last 20 years I have been threatening to get chickens again, since store bought eggs taste terrible to me, but circumstances (and my Hubby) kept putting this off. Well 5 and a half months ago I just decided I had waited too long already and went to the local feed store and purchased 5 pullets (the 2 lakenvelders and 3 marans). It wasn't too big a shock for my husband who has gotten used to me bringing home strays over the years but he did have to scramble to clear the area for the coop in our back yard and begin construction on my strange coop design (he's a sucker for cute babies). 15 more pullets followed over the next few weeks.
Your site has been awesome for giving me so many great ideas for building the perfect coop etc. that I thought I should finally register so I can join your great discussions. Looking forward to more great info from you all. Thanks for the great ideas! My current coop is light years ahead of the coops I've used in the past and I can't believe how much easier it is to feed and care for the chickens with a great design, and collecting eggs is no effort at all! Thanks again.
