We were recently adopted by 3 orphaned chickens. They were orphaned Christmas week when their owner was murdered in his home about a quarter mile from us. I walked over there to feed them every day after the sherriff and state police finished the investigation. When the feed ran out, I bought more but kept it in my carport instead of at Bobby's. Thats when they started following me home.

That led to us starting to learn more about them. I now know they are American Game birds. A hen and 2 roosters. They are well behaved and get along with the cat, and my parent's Jack Russell Terriers who live next door.
One of the roosters, we named RuPaul, is mostly alone or following us around. He is beautiful, All cream, blond, with bright copper patches. He really looks like a decked out drag Queen:

The hen, Skinny Chick, has started a cluth of eggs in a sheltered flower bed in our front yard. There is 8 or 9 eggs but she has not started sitting. The bossy rooster is also very handsome. He is much darker with red markings on his body and a greenish black tail. He is colored a lot like that beautiful rooster, Solaris, in the 'stories and picts' forum, in the most handsome rooster contest.
I think I would like to try incubating some of Skimmy Chick's eggs one day if she is not successful in raising a brood. We are in a very rual area, on 80 acres with a swampy creek at the back of the property. Lots of critters that would love to eat chicken and/or eggs. If I raise some from hatchlings they would be easy to handle and be used to being put up at night.
I feel good that Bobby's pets are enjoying life with us. I want them to live out their lives as healthy and happy as possible. Bobby lived alone with only his chickens for company and he took good care of them. I am so glad BYC is here to help me do it right. Thanks, Ya'll.

What a great thing you did in taking care of those birds after such a tragedy. Make them a small little coop at your place or put them in the garage at night.

Good luck and welcome to BYC you will love it here.

Post pics of your adopted kids for us to see.

What a kind thing for you to do. The chickens obviously know where they belong now. Just wondering what kind of predators you have there. My hens would be toast if left unprotected at night. You will need to think over how you can provide protection. Best of luck to you in this "random act of kindness".

You will learn a lot form all the experienced people here on the forum! I know I have!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. Yes we are enjoying the new yard birds:) Bobby had already taught them to roost in the trees at night, and that's what they do here as well. If and when Skinny Chick starts sitting on those eggs we have some fine wire mesh to make an open-bottom box from and put it over the nest area at night.
As for predators, we are in east-central Mississippi, and we regularly see from our house, coyote, fox, racoon, possum, skunk, copperhead, owls, hawks and eagle.
Bobby used to sit out in the evening with a shotgun until all his chickens got up into the trees:cool: He even made them a nice tree roosting box with a little ramp all the way up to it, but he could never get them to use it:/
