Hi!
I have been a serious lurker here for almost 2 years now. I know, I know..... don't say it. ... .. I'm a scardey cat, I guess, ha ha. I didn't want to join until I had our own chickens, but I felt the need at this point to at least join, and introduce myself.
I have spent the past two years learning about taking care of the small flock at my older son's preschool. As time has passed my family really started yearning for our OWN flock. Now that my oldest baby is not such a baby anymore, and will be going to kindergarten.... no more living vicariously through his preschool to get our chicken fix. So I am emerging from the shadows, lol. We are preparing our new coop, building our run, and getting ready to acquire our first chickens and ducks!
So, fist, I wanted to say thank you thank you thank you to all the folks on this site. It is you who have answered many, MANY questions for me as I was learning about how to care for the preschool chicken flock. You have also provided much entertainment with so many fun stories. I enjoy reading about everyone's experiences .
Anyway. I will try to not be such a stranger. No more lurking!
We are getting:
Ameraucana, Black Australorp, Silver Wyandotte chicks. One of each. Maybe another or two? Maybe different breeds? We are often to suggestions. We are also getting a few Saxony ducks. These are all of the breeds that have come up as favorites while my family and our housemates' family have been researching breeds of both chickens and ducks.
We have 4 kids at home - all boys. My husband and I have an almost-5-year-old and an 8 month old, and our housemates have a 3 year old and a 10 month old. And yes, it is a BIG house.
plenty of room for all of us. It's a little crazy at times, of course, but it's definitely never dull! Our roomies are awesome, and we are all on mostly the same page about almost everything......... including wanting chickens and ducks. Hooray.
Anyone else in Oakland?? Any advice or thoughts to share? I feel pretty confident on my knowledge of the livestock rules and laws but if anyone has any thoughts to share it would be appreciated. I am also wondering, does anyone maybe have any suggestions for another breed that might get along well with the ones we are already getting and also is good to have with kids? I'm thinking of Brahmas maybe, but can't seem to find anyone in our area who has them. Sad face, So I'm seeking suggestions please, and/or a lead if you know someone in the bay area who breeds Brahmas and would sell us a chick or two.
Thank you, and I'm happy to be here. Woo, go backyard flock!!!
Peace!
~Poppy
