Hi Everyone,

My name is Sue Downs, and I am new to this list, as well as to chickens. As a matter of fact, I don't even have my first chicken yet! My husband, Ed, and I have been raising alpacas and llamas for the past 14 years, and our neighbors all have chickens. We are planning for them, and I thought it might be in the best interest of our future birds if I had a clue about raising them properly before bringing them onto our 11 acre ranch. So, here I am, ready to learn everything I can about having a flock of happy, healthy chickens!

We love animals, and are not interested in eating our birds. We will appreciate the gift of their eggs and their company, and if they would like to eat whatever insects are wandering around, all the better! We live in the countryside in Payne County, Oklahoma, about 20 miles east of Stillwater, not far from Yale. We have been waiting until we have our perimeter fencing in place before bringing in the chickens so they can wander around wherever they like without fear of predators. That is where we are now, in terms of farm development.

I am excited about getting to know the people on BYC and learning about all the different types of chickens y'all have. Thanks for having me!

Welcome to BYC!

You will want to start in our learning center. Lots of great articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry. From getting started, building the coop, raising your chicks, and caring for your adult flock, keeping them happy, healthy and safe from predators...

Predators are everywhere, even though you don't see them. So if there is any chance that you may have them lurking or flying, you might consider using covered run and only let the birds out under supervision.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Thank you all, so much, for the warm welcome! I was over at my sister-in-law'splace yesterday, and it turns out that she has lost one of her lovely chickens. :(. I would like to try to figure out what happened to her, especially to prevent anything from happening to the remaining three ladies. I will be checking the forums you are all recommending, and can't wait to learn all about these lovely birds. Thank you so much for having me! -- Sue
