When my husband and I moved next door to my parents we wanted to give our kids the "farming experience". We have five kids betweenthe two of us and thought it would help the bringing together of the two families.
This summer my son caught some chickens in the You-Catch-It-You-Keep-It event. (The name says it all!!!) That got my mother and I thinking. We wanted chickens again. (We used to have them when I was a kid)
We built a chicken house and started buying chickens. We hoped it would help lower the egg bill. My household eats five dozen eggs at breakfast!!!!
I keep finding myself at the chicken house just watching and listing to them!! My kids like to catch grasshoppers and feed them to the chickens as well as picking green grass for them.
We have an assortment of chickens. I don't know all the different breeds, but they lay brown eggs. I know I have a bardrock, a few bufffs, a few rirs, and the rest I don't know what they are.
We also have three goats, five horses, four dogs, and LOTS of cats between the two houses.

- I remember that your parents just joined. No wonder they were talking about how much the horses feed bill was. Five horses - wow!
