Hello, Our family adopted 5 hens and 1 rooster at the beginning of April 2020. Since then we have raised 32 chicks till 14 weeks old and then downsized to 16 and then downsized to 8 when they were about 20 weeks old. We have adopted other hens along the way and now have 16 hens and 2 roosters. We have had lots of learning opportunities
foxes killing 4 hens, a hawk trying to take off with one, sour crop, death for no apparent reason, a brooding chicken who hatched one egg and so many other things. Our coop and pen continues to transform as the birds get bigger and the weather changes. The youngsters should be producing some eggs soon. We have black and yellow female labs who are fascinated by the chickens especially their droppings
And a maincoon cat that would love to wrestle with them. We are all enjoying the chickens and their antics and different personalities. I am constantly thinking about their welfare and comfort which can drive my family crazy. Last week the temp went down to -7 outside and the inside was -2.... and we have a big snow fall. I found this site by looking for an answer to some question I had at the beginning. It has been a wealth of information for me. Thanks to everyone for contributing. Debbie
