Hello everyone! I am Born again chicken owner...meaning I had them for about 10 years, but left them behind with the new owners about 15 years ago. I just picked up 2 light Brahmas and 2 Americanas. I will be getting 3 Buff Orphingtons this weekend. The one I have are about a week old (I think..they are just starting to get a few wing feathers). I have then st up in a homemade brooder modeled after one I saw here. It is made from a plastic storage tote with 1/4" hardware cloth. set into one 1/2 of the lid. I have a red 40 watt bulb in a reflector on top of the mesh with food/water inside. They have enough room to get away from the heat if the want. They are indoors right now but I have a livestock tank about 2' tall I would like to move them too soon. It would have to be outside because it is too big for the house and too hot in the garage. What age do people feel is OK enough to move them outside? I keep finches and have outside flights so I am thinking of putting them on the floor of one of the bigger flights until the coop/run are ready for them.

, Where are you located? This will effect when to allow them to stay outside.

LOL!!! Guess I should have been more clear. I am in Paradise, CA. We are about 1 hr 45 minute north of Sacramento up in the foothills at about 2200 feet. We get a bit of snow in the winter and temps can get up to 100+ in the summer. Mother Nature is giving us a bit of a treat with day time temps at about 79 and night time in the mid 50s. By the weekend we will be back up to our normal of 95-98 degree day times.

Hi and :welcome

The general opinion seems to be that (night temps) 40*F - six weeks old, 60*F - four weeks old.
You should get away with getting them outside pretty young as you would be in summertime right now.

The best indicators are your chicks though - if they seem cold when you take them outside, they're probably not ready yet. :old

Good luck! I hope you find all the info you need here. Enjoy the site. :D
