Hi from Phoenix, AZ. We are very new to this and love this great web-site. I used this site to raise our two chicks in January of 2012. They are now laying eggs, at least one of them. One of them might be a rooster, it's so agressive. My son named them Pongo and Perde from 101 Dalmatians. We've been getting a white egg every other day. My main goal was to not buy store bought eggs anymore. Having just two hens is not accomplishing that goal. So the other day, I bought 3 more chicks. Not sure what breed they are.

Question?
We've been keeping our three chicks in our garage. Phoenix, AZ can get hot!!! We have a little fan on them to circulate the air, but I'm worried the garage is cooking them. I open up our side door sometimes so the chicks have some outside air. I checked the temperature in the garage it was 90. How hot is too hot for the chicks? We have our two grown hens in our coop outback and they seem to be fine. When can you put the chicks and the hens together in the coop?

Here's Pongo. What Breed? Is it a Rooster? He's the agressive one.

Here's Pongo again and Perde in the background?

Here's our new chicks, aren't they cute!!

Here's chonk! My son named the chicks? What breed?

Here's Freddy. What breed?

Here's George. What breed do you think? It's funny how my son named all the chicks boys names.

Your older hens are light brown leghorns, and both are hens. 90 degrees is fine. I'd be concerned that temperatures in Az would exceed 100 in the garage.

Pongo may be aggressive, but I'm betting you are bgger. Convince her that you are the boss.

sourland has good advice. Watch the temperature in the garage and the behavior of the chicks too--they'll tell you if they're getting too hot or too cold. If you haven't already found it, be sure to drop in and say hello on our BYC Arizona thread.

Your chickens are beautiful!

That's a terrible dust storm you have rolling through Phoenix right now, Pics were on national news.... Those chicks should be happy they have a garage to hide in, out of the weather.
