Hi everyone, I've been lurking around the forums since I decided to get chickens last spring, but I'm finally getting around to joining!
I'm on 200 farm protected acres in Rhode Island, and I finally built a chicken tractor and got seven day-old chicks from My Pet Chicken last April.
After paying extra to make sure I had no roosters's I ended up with two! It was trial and error, and we sadly lost three chickens on our journey so far. A fox grabbed one of my Anconas, a hawk flew off with one of my silkies, and a careless neighbors dog killed another ancona. I've currently got a silkie rooster, and three anconas (one is a roo). One of my silkie girls developed wry neck, and thanks to the forum we had her feeling better in no time! My ancona roo is doing a fantastic job protecting his girls now, and their coop/run/pen is set up like a fortress that seems to be working. I'll try uploading some pictures later!
On the farm we've also got 36 horses, everything from pleasure trail riders to gold medal dressage riders. There's two large pet goats, George and George, who belong to the barn manager. A 17 year old barn cat, two lovely golden retrievers, and a poodle also live up by the barn. We grow everything from our own hay to kale, and loan a field to the local food pantry. There's also acres of woods filled with hiking trails and wildlife.
Inside the house are two malteses, Spike and Moose, a lab/husky/australian shepard named Paz, and two hedgehogs.
We're currently looking to add at least four more laying hens, and a pygmy goat or two to the herd here. If anyone knows of places around RI/MA/CT to find them I would love some recommendations! It's been surprisingly find to find breeders, and supplies/resources other than Tractor Supply!
Thanks!
