Quelimane, Mozambique
Hi y'all, after 21 days having had to smuggle Orpington Buff eggs into this rural, backwater town of Quelimane, Mozambique, and having had to deal with an inadequate incubator and electricity outages, our first chic hatched this morning. This is nothing short of a miracle seeing I had to remove the eggs from the incubator for a whole day and keep them warm in a car with the heater running.
It seems like we are in good company.

Friendly greetings from dark Africa.

Welcome to BYC!
Congrats!

Make sure have a good chick starter or starter grower 20 % medicated feed for them if able. Can put sav a chick electrolytes in water to give a boost. If mom not sitting on them are you brooding inside? Temp should be 90-95 first week then wean weekly by 5 degrees till at 65-70 degrees. Babies need warmth if not under a broody mama. Usually go out at 4-5 weeks earliest when fully feathered out. Latest 6-8 weeks. Make sure netted or screened top on brooder so no escape routes as fly in first week or two. What are your temps like in Africa? We are at freezing temps here still.

Hi Melky
We have no convenience store or shop where we can buy ask the nice feeds and starters that 1st works countries provide.
Nothing like that. At all. We'll have make plans.
Temperatures here never fall below 18°C. (64.4°F).
It is hot and humid.
It is primitive and back water. We're moving to an old farm with a huge plantation house from colonial times soon. There is an old chicken run there that we plan to refurbish.
I grew up in South Africa and I'm not new to chickens, but there you can buy all the goodies and things from hatcheries. That unfortunately is 2 days of hard driving from where we are now.
We're going to need a lot of prayer, help and support.
Friendly greetings from my wife and me.

Bonjour :frowand welcome from France! Wow it sounds like you are starting an amazing adventure! I'd love to see pics of your new farm - I bet it is amazing! Even here in France I can't get (without a huge drive) any medicated feed or anything like that. Just do the best with what you have available, chickens all over the world manage without a lot of the stuff available in the US!
