(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Not new to chickens. Had them all my life until I got married and moved away from home.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Unfortunately, none due to local ordinances. However, I am seeing a light and hope to get help here.

(3) What breeds do you have? None

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Web search

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Sewing, gardening, crafts, soapmaking, candlemaking, hiking, nature, raising monarch butterflies, animals, Bible study, bike riding

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. One husband (married 27 years), two sons (20 and 17), one dog (16-year-old Bichon Frise), 1 parakeet, 1 Meyer parrot, 30-gallon aquarium with platy fish, 4 rats (YES, they are wonderful pets!). I am a stay-at-home mom who may be going back to work part-time soon. Was in a serious accident a year ago and spent 6 weeks in the hospital. Recovering well, but hoping I can get some chickens SOON. Would lift my spirits. Love green tea and good, dark chocolate. Love animal husbandry.

Curiously, back in 2005, I purchased a couple dozen eggs from the famous VikkiP and bought an incubator and hatched the chicks (my boys LOVED the experience!), only to learn that I could not legally own them in Shelby Township. It was very disappointing! Vikki graciously agreed to take some, and the rest we drove 600 miles to my grandparent's farm in Iowa. The desire to own my own flock has never left me, and I am HOPING that Vikki's case will give me an easier road. It seems that with the Michigan RTFA, I should be OK, but it is still not perfectly clear to me. Need to read more and maybe talk with Vikki.

Thanks for the great site and forum. Hen fever is REAL, I can tell you that much! Thanks for having me here. I'm sure I'll learn a lot!

Thank you! Glad to be here.

Seems like my hopes of owning a small flock are quickly becoming dashed once again. I am researching how to get the laws (ordinances) changed in my area. I'm not typically the type of person that likes to be in the public eye, but it is CRAZY that chickens are illegal in my area. Wish me luck!

Hello and :welcome
I hope it's possible for you to change your town's ordinance, chickens are such a fantastic experience! Perhaps you could visit the Where am I, where are you section, and see if there are any BYCers living near you, or even in your town. Perhaps you could work together, then. I'm sorry, I'm not an expert on how these things work!
Anyway, good luck, and I do hope you enjoy the site. :)

Thank you! I took your suggestion. Hopefully some people will see it and we can join forces!

Hi,

Well, I started a Yahoo Group for anybody who wants to join me in my quest for getting the laws changed in Shelby Twp. know about the MRTFA, but for those of us who just want a few pet hens and not go "commercial", this would be for people like us.

The Yahoo group is called ShelbyTownship_BackYardChickens. Anybody from here who's interested, come on over and let's get moving on this. From all I've read here, it could take awhile.

Thanks,
Sandy

I will also post a couple other places. I hope that's alright. Don't want anybody to miss this if they are interested. Thanks, everybody, for your well wishes and warm welcome!
