(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Not new to chickens. Had them all my life until I got married and moved away from home.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Unfortunately, none due to local ordinances. However, I am seeing a light and hope to get help here.
(3) What breeds do you have? None
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Web search
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Sewing, gardening, crafts, soapmaking, candlemaking, hiking, nature, raising monarch butterflies, animals, Bible study, bike riding
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. One husband (married 27 years), two sons (20 and 17), one dog (16-year-old Bichon Frise), 1 parakeet, 1 Meyer parrot, 30-gallon aquarium with platy fish, 4 rats (YES, they are wonderful pets!). I am a stay-at-home mom who may be going back to work part-time soon. Was in a serious accident a year ago and spent 6 weeks in the hospital. Recovering well, but hoping I can get some chickens SOON. Would lift my spirits. Love green tea and good, dark chocolate. Love animal husbandry.
Curiously, back in 2005, I purchased a couple dozen eggs from the famous VikkiP and bought an incubator and hatched the chicks (my boys LOVED the experience!), only to learn that I could not legally own them in Shelby Township. It was very disappointing! Vikki graciously agreed to take some, and the rest we drove 600 miles to my grandparent's farm in Iowa. The desire to own my own flock has never left me, and I am HOPING that Vikki's case will give me an easier road. It seems that with the Michigan RTFA, I should be OK, but it is still not perfectly clear to me. Need to read more and maybe talk with Vikki.
Thanks for the great site and forum. Hen fever is REAL, I can tell you that much! Thanks for having me here. I'm sure I'll learn a lot!
