Hi! This is my first time raising chickens. I started with 4 from the feed store that lived in my front room until last weekend when they moved to their new coop--our former garden shed. I attached a large dog run to the shed so they have some outside space too. They get about an hour of free range time every day too while I clean the coop and water the plants. Everything was going very well until yesterday. I had an escape artist chick, so I always looked outside before letting the dogs out. My husband did not check for escapees before letting the dogs out and our hunting dog killed Peep instantly. So I'm down to three 9 week old chicks: 2 Red Rangers and 1 California White. The feed store has some three week old pullets and I'm considering getting a pair, but I've finally got these three to an age where they're easily manageable and don't live in my front room any more and I dont know that I want to start over.
Anyway I've been lurking on here for awhile and I've found it incredibly helpful, so thanks very much!
So sorry about the chick you lost. These things do happen. But it does sound like you are hooked on chickens! If you do get more chickens, make sure to introduce them slowly from a cage or a fenced off area but within the flock. Leave the newbies separated like this for a few weeks. Everybody sees, nobody touches. In a few weeks you can mix them together without too much fighting. However always watch that day and the following week. And always intervene if it turns bloody.
Also, mix birds that are all about the same size. If you have small ones, they will need to wait until they grow up to go with larger birds.
Enjoy establishing your new flock and welcome to ours!
Thanks! I am hooked on chickens. I had no idea they would have so much personality they're very entertaining. I'm still on the fence about getting more. At least it's warm out now so I don't think they'd have to live in the house. I had the babies in a rabbit cage, which was a nice size but they would scratch and the whole house would fill with pine shavings. Now I know why people use rubbermaid tubs for brooders!
Hello and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the chick you lost. The weather is the nice thing about this time of year and chicks, you can usually get them out sooner because it was warmer.
Well I caved. I had made up my mind that three chickens was enough for this year. And then I went to Runnings to look for a better waterer because I HATE the one I have and there was a tub of silver laced Wyandottes and I couldn't resist. So I have baby chicks in my front room again.
