I'm a handicapped mother. We live on a small farm with a dog, two cats, two rabbits and a stocked fish pond. We are in the process of building our chicken coop. I've never had chickens but have been reading everything I can find. There are so many different chickens to choose from. We want chickens that are broody. I want chickens that are gentle. I care for one once and nearly got pecked to death trying to get her eggs.
We have two large gardens and a miniature orchard.

Welcome to BYC!

You could always check in at the feed store to see what they got. Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island reds, Golden, Red, and Black Sexlinks are all wonderful layers also.

Welcome to BYC!

So glad you could join our community! Broodies like to peck you when you steal their eggs! Lots of great chickens out there that go broody, are friendly and that are great layers too. I am fond of the Orpington breeds as they fall right into this category.

Here are a couple of external pages that will give you some quick info on each breed, their temperaments, broodiness and hardiness, etc....

You may also like to do some reading in our learning center here on BYC for lots of great tips and hints on raising your new flock....

If you have any other questions, that is what we are here for. Welcome to our flock and enjoy your new adventure!

Thank you for your kind welcome. I looked at the oppingtons. They are pretty. It says they are great in cold winters but how do they handle hot summers? We have both. This winter was so cold our pond froze over solid. Our summer can get up in the high 90s.
