Hi everyone. I'm new to chickens and new to BYC but have been learning from the forums and thought I should introduce myself.
I live in southern Italy, right around the spur of the boot, with my husband, too many dogs and our4 3 ovaiole, a battery-type hybrid. I was apprehensive about them, but my husband could not wait to start raising poultry, so we bought the girls at six months old and built them a chicken tractor that we haul around a few acres of olive groves and organic gardens.
I have grown very fond of them, though the original idea was to locate a breeder of Ancona and Padovano chooks, some proper Italian breeds. As it goes, the little red ovaiole are charming and sweet and have adapted well to running around my garden munching up bugs. Now I can't wait to expand the flock with some heritage breeds.
I'm not an Italian citizen (yet) but I love out-Italianing my friends and relatives here: the pasta, frittatas, and cakes we make with our eggs are the best.
