I am a new member and have three Columbian blacktails. They are lovely and very easy to get along with. My dog and cat have made friends with them within a week and now we all happily get along! The only thing is that all three my hens were point of lay when I got them and I know for certain that one of them is laying an egg every day. She is the shyest of the three and also a bit of an outsider - I call her Shy Susan! One of the other two is laying but I have not got it clear who it is as they often disappear in the nest box together and the most forward one, Mrs Bouquet" comes out cackling loudly, so I assume she must have laid it. The third one - middle of the pecking order and big friends with Mrs Bouquet is probably not laying at all. Would it help if I would put a separate nest box in the run? I have quite a large run of 2 x 6 metres with an egglu in it. The daily two eggs are laid in the eggbox in the egglu, but maybe Mrs In-between (for want of a better name) wants some more privacy? My chicken-psychology is not up to scratch yet! Any help will be gratefully received!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens, I'd give Ms.In-between some more time. Even if your girls were identical triplets they wouldn't all start laying at the same time. If anything I would think Shy Susan would want more privacy in order to lay an egg. I think In-between will lay just fine once she is ready.

so glad you have joined us.

You'll know when all are laying when they do so on the same day. Some are quiet layers and just leave the nest, others sing and announce their own eggs, and others sing and announce that someone else has laid. I think my hens do this just to confuse me :)

Some prefer to sit in the same nest even with one open.

Thanks for all your responses. Yes, chickens are quite new to me so I should realize it is not an "exact science". This morning I discovered it might actually be Ms Bouquet who is not laying, although she indeed announces others' eggs quite loudly. Fascinating!
