It's been years since I had chickens. I took care of my landlords chickens for a few years back in the nineties and thoroughly enjoyed the fresh eggs and the amusing antics of the birds. 2 years ago, my bf brought home 6 guinea fowl, and I was so excited, but then he decided to give them to his Mom instead to help with tick control. My disappointment was incredible
Sadly, they were all killed by predators.
Back in April, I was offered 26 chicks (3 EE roosters, 11 EE hens, 6 BR and 6 RIR) for rescue due to a shipping error that landed the chicks hundreds of miles away from their intended destination. After calling to let the hatchery and the waiting customer know what happened, it was decided that a new batch would be sent to the original customer and that if I was willing to take them so they would not expire, everyone would be very happy. Of course I took them in right away. I kept 7, and re-homed the rest with friends. my bf tried to keep 4, but his landlord said no, (and so did his Mom) so I ended up taking them back, Then I had additional friends who asked if I still had chicks that needed homes (awww, such awesome friends!) so I gave them 2 from my original 7.
My little flock of 9 consists of 2 EE cockerels, Royce and Barney, and 7 pullets, 2 BR's, Wilma and Betty, 2 RIR's (or most likely red sex links) Rose and Violet, and 3 EE's, Isis, Blu B'ree and Lily. Along with my Pug Ruby Begonia de Blueberry and 4 cats, MinMin, Ollie-Mon, Emma-Lee and Hershey-Me-Boy (RIP Pearl) we are a very happy peculiar family. Folks often slow way down when driving by my place as you're likely to see white tail deer, bunnies of all colors or the group of us all relaxing in the yard together, I see them shake their heads and smile to see cats lying amongst the flock ~ Ollie lets the birds pick bugs off his long hair!
ramble ramble ramble... sorry it's so long... I really love BYC, the info is invaluable, haven't been stumped on any question, the folks here are so encouraging and the photos are spectacular!
