In the Brooder
Hi everyone!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My family had chickens when I was little, but I wasn’t able to convince my husband that I had time to care for chickens until this April- so I’m almost 4 months into having my own little flock.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 4 pullets that are almost 16 weeks old (one started laying two days ago), 1 cockerel that is around 14 weeks, and 4 that are probably 2.5-3 weeks old.
(3) What breeds do you have?
The older girls are red sex-links- Golden Comets & ISA Browns. The cockerel is an Ameraucana from a local breeder that doesn’t separate his flock by color (lavender roos over black and blue hens), so I am not sure if his coloring conforms to the breed standards. And we picked up 3 Easter Eggers & 1 Black Australorp from TSC just over two weeks ago. I am already thinking that the Australorp “pullet” is feathering too slowly to be a girl.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are so funny and usually relaxing to watch. They give me an excuse to leave the confines of the house & get some outside time, even if that involves cleaning the coop.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, trail running (in the Before Times), cooking, wrangling my kids, rescuing animals when needed, and pretending like online shopping is as fun as meandering through TJ Maxx or Target.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
1 husband, 2 kids, 1 dog, 7 cats, 9 chickens, yoga instructor (in the Before), soon-to-be teaching assistant to my kids, self-medicating with chickens and chocolate and caffeine to cope, and breast cancer survivor.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I keep Googling questions & finding answers on here (most from almost a decade ago), so I figured I should join.
