Last October I was in my garage getting my van ready for a road trip. My youngest was cleaning the front windshield and wanted to know how to turn the turn signal on. In my head in I was wondering why she wanted to know, and why she was making soft prepping noises. I turned to ask her and found myself looking at a young hen. That was it, we now have a bantam hen living in a pen in our living room. A few weeks ago, Gurtrude was looking in a mirror and making sad chicken noises at her reflection. She would fall asleep, then wake up to make some the other chicken was still there. There is now a bantam cochin nugget named Lizbeth splitting her time between the living room and my daughter's room. When she's big enough, she will move in with Gurtrude. Door now, Lizbeth's daytime cage is near Gurtrude's pen so they can be used to each other and intros will hopefully go smoother. And that's how we ended up with 2 house chickens.

She's very docile, and people oriented. She lets me trim her nails worth a rotary file, and file her beak. A few weeks ago she fell of her perch and cut her head. We were able to clean it easily, and she wore a steri-strip Jay for a week. Her favorite thing is getting crickets when she has out time in the kitchen. She has a harness and leash to go outside, likes car rides, and wears a diaper for out time in the house so she has more places she can go. She gets lots of attention when we take her out, so she's kind of a celebrity.

Welcome!

What a lovely introduction to chickens, thank you for sharing. Gurtrude sounds adorable and also like she is having a wonderful time! She knew what she was doing when she picked such a loving family to live with.

I have a couple of bantam Cochins and they are just the sweetest little girls.

There is an active thread with people who keep house chickens: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/299187/people-with-house-chickens

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.
