Hi, I'm Karen from Olympia, Washington.

When my daughter got her first flock, I thought she was insane. Now I've been bitten by the same bug. We've been raising chickens for about a year now. We bought our first flock of two week old straight-run Ameraucana/Australorp babies. They grew into three pullets and five roos, dang the luck! We chose one very sweet roo for our girls and the other four were processed. We don't do that anymore, because Greg doesn't like to kill them, and I can't eat my babies. That left us with just three hens and one roo, so I bought a flock of 12 RIRs. I chose the ones I wanted and sold the rest. I've since purchased an Easter egger and a mutt. One of my original flock has recently gone broody, so I'm working like mad to make her a little coop and run because the other girls won't leave her alone and have ripped her off of her nest. Right now we've got 11 girls...sold Wilson, our roo, when he got very threatening to my grandson. (they're free range, so is my grandson!)

I learned about BYC from a google search, but after I found you, a lot of people have recommended your site.

I love photography and digital editing. I also tend to be a caregiver, right now I'm helping my dying aunt to come to terms with death. I've got four grandkids (two bio, two step), all from my oldest son who died three years ago this month. I've got four other kids, the three boys have moved to Texas to find their own way, my only daughter is just moving down to Olympia, right across the road from us, and I couldn't be happier!

So, that's me. Anybody else from the South Sound area?

Hi Karen!

Sounds like you are one busy lady! I too have been bitten by the chicken bug and am hoping to infect my OWN mother with the same bug. I feel like she would love being a chicken mom. :) You sound like great mom and grandma. I'm sorry to hear about your son Karen.....as a mother of five myself, I can't even imagine what that must feel like. I am glad that you have chickens. They are therapeutic and calming to me. I hope they are the same for you. :)

Thank you. For some reason, I find the chaotic going on of the birds to be really calming. I've thought I should make them tiny little uniforms, toss in a watermelon rind, and watch the game!

Hi :welcome Karen

Glad you could join the flock! What a lovely intro into your life and chicken keeping. I'm sorry to hear about your son, it must be very difficult for you :hugs
On a lighter note I have to say your grandson being free range too had me in stiches :gig

I too did not intend on keeping chickens and thought my other half was mad when he announced we were getting a couple for the garden. Well that was it once they were here and there is no stopping me now!! I really do have chicken addiction.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your flock in the future.

Enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to Backyard chickens, Karen, very nice to meet you. You certainly are a great mom and caregiver.

Watching "Chicken TV" seems to be very therapeutic for all involved. No reruns, new shows everyday., no cable or satellite bills.
