I’m a first time chicken raiser but have long been interested in becoming one. My daughter and I purchased 6 little chicks in mid May of this year; 3 Jersey Giants and 3 Rhode Island Reds. It’s a small flock to start with but it’s what we felt was a good number to start with. We thought we had all hens until recently we realized that one of our hens; Betty; was actually Bob, so we have 5 hens and 1 rooster. We have a nice set up in our backyard with our landlords blessing and and enclosed run with a big back yard for them to explore when my daughter and I are out there. We are currently in the process of putting and extension on the coop to give more room for them to roost. We look forward to some eggs soon and all that it entails.
