Hi there from Wyoming.
I had farm grandmothers who raised chickens when I was a youngster, and my 12 year old (boy) became interested in chickens after a visit to the feed store for rabbit pellets.
We ended up with some Orpingtons (buff) and Easter eggers, now about 8 weeks old.
Hubby built us a nice insulated chicken coop and a range wire fence over about 1/2 acre. (It took a bit of nagging, but it was worth it.)
I was very interested in the "sexing Easter eggers" thread and think that we may have one roo in the bunch even though they were all supposed to be pullets. I live out in the country so I can have roos if we choose to.
We became interested in some of the other rarer breeds, specifically lavender Orphingtons (my 12 year old) and French Marans (hubby and me). I ordered eggs to hatch from Ebay and had some lovely lavender Orpingtons that died at various stages before pipping and some gorgeous blue Ameraucana (eggs from Jody) of which we hatched out only one chick, but the cutest chick ever born (in my estimation anyway.) Thanks to Jody's suggestion, I came here and learned a thing or two about hatching. We just last week hatched out 9 black copper Marans out of twelve eggs, so we are getting better, and Jody is sending us some more eggs as well.
Anyway, Hubby says now I have a "chicken problem" but I think that he secretly enjoys them as much as I do. I will probably have tons of questions, but I have learned so much already from hanging out in "stealth mode"
Happy clucking,
Sharon.
