Sorry if I've done this wrong and/or it is in the wrong place

I've just joined as we plan on getting four new chickens! This is our first time owning chickens and we plan on showing them. The breeds we are getting is two Orpingtons and two Cochins! We know of a place that does both breeds including barred Orpingtons!!! We love this patterning so we will definitely be getting one of these! But we would also be getting three more chickens. Which colours do you suggest for showing? They have loads! We are overwhelmed by the choices so we thought what better people to ask than you guys on here! Thankyou so much, hello again! And again so sorry if this is in the wrong place/thing

Does this place that "has loads, ' show their birds? Lots of folks say their stock is show quality when they have never shown any of them. And don't even know the standard of Perfection. . When someone has many breeds and many of each color, variety etc. my red flag goes up - they can also be a "chicken mill," as I tend to call them .

My friend ordered a black frizzle from someone in Mn. who had just about every breed of duck, goose, chicken etc. He was allegedly a famous breeder. Whatever, he sold her a very sick hen. She arrived so covered in poo that she had to be bathed several times before the stench was mostly gone. The poor girl never improved and was found dead one morning with gapeworms coming from her mouth. The breeder said when one of his friends was showing in her area, he would bring a replacement bird to her home. Well that was a few years ago and never materialized.

The person you plan to deal with may be completely above board but it is always good to be cautious and get some documentation. I hope you get beautiful show prospects in the breeds you want and will follow up with photos, so we can enjoy them also. Above all Welcome to Backyard chickens.

we have got their contact from a family friend who knows them extremely well. They do do showing with them so I can trust that they know what they are doing. But we have made sure we know exactly what we are looking for health and show standards wise. I'm so sorry to hear about your friends birds. That must have been terrible :( they only do Wyandottes, Orpingtons and Cochins. It's taken us so long to find a barred Orpington! What do people mean about showing 4H? Surely the bird still matters? Sorry to be asking you all these questions. The main point was which colours do well in shows? Thankyou

If you're showing for 4H it doesn't really matter then. Pick what you like. They aren't judging the birds, they are judging you. Heritage Orpingtons and Cochins can be very slow to mature.
We would be showing in both 4 h and serious shows.

Quite frankly, I've seen Silver Laced Wyandottes shown at 4H fairs that were entered as Barred Rocks and still won best of class. Either the quality of the chicken doesn't matter, or the judges have no idea what they are doing. I'm pretty sure it's the kids that are being judged, not the animals.
