Hi! I’m Harvey’s mom and new to the community. I could use some advice.

Welcome to BYC and thank you for sharing...Does Trudy and Harvey hang out together? Or is he too little? Would a chicken be kind to a duckling? I have never had ducks.
Ducks and chickens generally tolerate each other well, but they don’t communicate the same way, each needs a friend of its own kind. And if Harvey is a Drake, he will severely harm and likely kill Trudy when he tries to mate her, their body parts work differently. Hopefully Harvey is a She, hopefully she gets well, hopefully you can get another girl duck and another girl chicken

Hi! They have not been introduced yet but I may do that this weekend. However, I don’t want to risk Trudy getting sassy and injuring Harvey. He’s got enough hurtles right now. Trudy stays outside in my side yard, so my dogs visit her multiple times a day to potty. Harvey has been inside only since I got him. I need to keep a close eye on him to monitor his condition. I also want to pet him regularly to keep his spirit up and get my cats and dogs used to him.

Thank you for the advice. I hope Harvey gets better and can have a good quality of life, but I’d be truly surprised if he could ever mount a chicken or a duck, especially one that is not interested in him. He will either need the left leg partially amputated, surgery, a prosthetic, or just use it to stabilize himself. My only concern with getting another duckling is if they both turn out to be males. I can’t have my boy (or girl) getting bullied!

Welcome. I agree about getting Trudy a friend. Also, since you like to have wildlife around, if you build Trudy a large run of 1/2 inch hardware cloth, sides and top, with a hardware cloth apron (extending the hardware cloth two feet on the ground after attaching at the ground), you won't have to worry about her.
