Hi all! I’m new to BYC. I have a small hobby farm that I am starting up. I’ve had chickens for 3 years. I have an assortment of breeds, including Orpington, maran, ameraucana, Wyandotte, Bresse, silkies and appenzeller spitzhaubens. I’m new to the silkies and am finding that they’re different than the other chicks I’ve raised!
Thanks for reading!

That’s so great! They are so cute. I actually just posted in the gender/breed ID thread about a couple that I’m not too sure about. They definitely are a lot harder to figure out early on than the regular chicks!
I don't even bother sexing silkies until they are minimally three months old, and that's still a guess. When they get four months old, then the cockerels may try to crow so there's a for sure. By five months it's solidly known what they are.

That’s good to know! I actually had several start crowing a week and a half or more ago, and that’s been helpful. But also good to know that it can take a while before I will know for sure. Thank you for your advice and experience!
