My name is Laurie and I don't have nay chickens yet. I want to research everything I need to before hand so I don't have any issues due to not knowing what I should when I get my chicks.

I have a large fenced yard that I am still trying to figure out the best location for my coop. I live in Texas so I want a nice area that gets sun with afternoon shade. I don't want my chickens to cook! I plan on letting them out a few hours every day, but otherwise they need to be caged in. I am very near a park and I don't want my birds to get taken. I also live on a corner with high visibility...

I have been looking at heat hardy chicken breeds, but they also need to handle the cold since we get snow and cold in my part of the state. I have picked out what I would like to get, I think. Some of my neighbors have or have had some of these breeds so I think they will do well here. I bet you want to know what I am considering.
Light brown leghorn
Easter Egger
Golden Campine-not so sure on this one
Barred Plymouth Rock Bantam-not so sure of them. I love how they look though.
I am planning on getting 3 chickens. I don't know how many eggs that will give me, but there are only 2 of here to eat them so I don't want a bunch of eggs sitting around. I know I can give/sell eggs too, so that is an option. I plan on ordering sexed chicks from My Pet Chicken so I get only hens. I can't have roosters.

So that is where I am right now. I only just recently decided to do this after years of thinking about getting chickens. I have realized that even though I live in the city, I really am a country girl at heart.

This is part of my back yard...

looks like a beautiful area for them. Do you have predators in your area? If you may want to spend time going thru the predator section or ideas on keeping them OUT.

Neighbors dogs running loose are one of the top preds of chickens, tho it seems like everything loves chickens from hawks to opossum.

We have hawks and owls, coyotes (haven't seen them near me), raccoons, foxes, opossums, cats, squirrels by the ton... I have a German Shepherd. She will be taught to leave them alone though.

My main concern are birds of prey, mice/rats and snakes. The fence keeps most things out of the yard. I plan on building a predator and snake proof coop. I've been looking through different ideas for coops all over the place.

Another concern I have is people stealing them. Since I probably can't be out with them every day I will have to make a run area for them that is large enough for them to be happy.

I just found out the feed store near my house buys sexed chicks to sell. I won't have to mail order them. :)

Welcome to the site Laurie. I am in Austin, TX. You have a nice yard. When you get the birds, take some pictures and show us.
