(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I had chicken years ago. I want to plan an enclosure, be prepared for medical, learn more before starting over again. I feel I didn't do it right when I had them before.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? None at the moment. I want to design a coop that suits the ones I eventually get. I would be raising them primarily for eggs and the pleasure of having them. I won't be raising them for meat. I don't balk at others who do, though. I just want mine for enjoyment and egg laying.

(3) What breeds do you have? None at the moment. I am planning to get them. I want good layers, silkies, and the small breeds for enjoyment. I like all sorts of breeds and hope they are gentle when I raise them. I expect the roosters to be ornery LOL. I have had hens who love affection, and I have had one who bit me and bruised me. That one was an ornery hen. One that I had flew up to sit on a visitor's shoulder, ha. Another sat on my knee and slept. I let them free-roam at the time, but I don't want to allow that anymore. Maybe if I am out there to watch them while gardening and their wings are clipped. We live on several acres.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Fresh eggs and just enjoying having them. It is relaxing to watch and feed them.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I love all sorts of hobbies. I kind of took a break from them. I love crocheting, reading, gardening, dollhouse miniatures, paper crafting, crosstitching, painting, and many more crafty activities. I found that I would like to learn cement crafting, knitting, the violin, and the flute. I am most interested in cement crafting. I love animals and would like to get my little hobby farm going again.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have 3 adult children. One is a nurse. One is in nursing school. My other one has autism. I have 3 cats. I foster cats/kittens when I can. My son has a cat, and my daughter has one. It has been a while, but I plan to start again. I have 2 chihuahuas. They are super cute and funny. And very sweet. I might consider a livestock guardian dog on down the road. I am not sure yet. I did have pet birds for many years, but my last two died. I miss having birds. Maybe I can get them again. I will see. Rabbits will be a part of my homestead as well. After I get chickens, ducks and geese. The rabbits I get will be my garden fertilizers LOL. I would like to have miniature nubian goats and other miniature breeds...a small herd. I want them for pets, but I have considered milking them. I just don't know yet. I will have to see how that goes. There is so much to consider. I mainly want them for pets and enjoyment. I miss having ducks and geese. They are so easy to keep and fun and relaxing to watch. I considered peacocks and peahens, but I am concerned about if they would bother my neighbors with their call. I like it, but some don't...and they make the noise at night during spring and summer. I will have to weigh my options out.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D It was from a search of coop plans. I joined because I want to arm myself with knowledge from experienced folks before getting more chickens. I know a decent amount about them, but I need more knowledge for better care of and healthy feathered friends.

I enjoyed your lively intro. It sounds like you have some ambitious goals!

My chickens (ducks and geese) are all just pets, too. Same with my sheep and miniature goats. When I go to the feed store and load up with bags of all kinds of feed, the cashiers have finally learned not to ask if get the farm-tax exemption; mine only cost me money -- they never make or save me any.

I live on an acreage and keep all the poultry cooped at night; I am retired and let them loose into a fenced yard during the day. I chose not to clip wings because I have owls, eagles, and a multitude of furry predators, and I want my poultry to be able to fly away if they need to. Your situation may be completely different.

Let us know when you get your birds, and good luck with more hobbies. Welcome to BYC!
