Hi. I have 5 silkies.

You sound like a fantastic mother !! We too had a " zoo " in our house , my kids learned lots . Now grown up one has dogs, cats and a snake and the other wants nothing to do with any animals

Silkies don't lay many eggs and sometimes after starting they decide to go broody and attempt to hatch eggs. Since you don't have a rooster, their eggs would be infertile.

However if they do go broody, you can usually slip fertile eggs under them and they will hatch & raise like their own - or any breed fertile eggs.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

I'm still trying to figure out how to post pics from my iPad. I got pictures of eggs and my chicken family. The night after I started this thread, my husband came home with Modern Game Bantam chicks! There's some kind of obsession going on with my family and chickens...

Our zoo currently consists of 3 dogs 2 parakeets, 2 turtles, 16 glow fish, 4 ball pythons and 8 chickens. We had a leopard gecko that we rescued but my niece begged and begged to let her take him home with her after she spent a month vacationing in our home and taking over his care. So the gecko is happily basking in her permanent care now. We also had an amazon parrot that we rescued years and years ago. He passed away not too long ago. We were very sad. He was a fun bird who loved to sing when my son plays the piano.

Here we call it chicken math, and it seems to be inevitable :D your zoo sounds awesome!

At 6 months you could have more roosters

, just saying my 7 month olds have not crowed or laid an egg yet!!!

What size egg did you get? Can you post it with a quarter beside it ?? I'd like to see what to expect , I'm scared I won't find the teeny, tiny eggs

I finally learned how to post pictures! Here's the small silkie egg right next to an extra-large chicken egg from the grocery. It's not too teeny. I found it to be the perfect size for my kids' favorite egg-in-a-toast breakfast. I take a piece of sliced bread, then press the back of a spoon onto the middle to form a sort of "well". I crack a silkie egg on top of the well then sprinkle shredded cheese around the edges then bake for 10 minutes at 350F. Then I top with baby spinach leaves and a slice of bacon cut into 2 pieces on top. My kids love it!
