Hi! I have 7 children in Salmon Arm BC, now to add chickens to the mix

Hi everyone! This forum is great!

I'm a homeschooling mom of 7, from almost-1yo up to almost-13yo. We have 4 acres in Salmon Arm BC (2 acres usable), but so far our only animals are a dog & an indoor rabbit (and the turtle DH found on the road yesterday

, that one is temporary!).

My almost-13yo really wants a chicken or two, so the research begins.

DO IT. Chickens are great for whatever you want them for - pets, eggs, meat.

Mine are my favorite pets so no meat but excellent healthy eggs.

I'm trying to narrow down breeds before I get 13yo's input. So far I think I like Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, & Brahmas. I'm looking for kid-friendly here

.

I also need to decide where to put them. I suppose with only 2 chickens, I could make a small coop that's easy-ish to move. I like the idea of them foraging a bit, but we don't really have any yard area that is suitable for fencing so was thinking of fencing off a chunk of the woods. Maybe a moveable pen to drop in the yard so they can get some grass? Once I come up with some more specific questions, I'll post in the proper forum areas.
