Hi my name is Jessica. I'm a homeschooling mom in southern Georgia (think Paula Deen) I am married to a wonderful man who is a full time plumber and part time pizza delivery guy. I have two boys 5 and 4 and I'm expecting a baby in December (Christmas Day is my due date actually).
I just bought a 5 chick family special from a website. I am hoping to raise the chicks as a sortof drawn out science class as well as get some eggs out of the deal

I am a bit worried I've bitten off more than I can chew but I have done tons of research and I think I'll be ok. the chicks we have coming are Silver Laced Wyandottes. I picked them because they seem like a sturdy breed and the website said they were friendly. Well that's me in an egg shell. Nice to meet ya'll and now I'm off to pour over the forum.

Its such a fun forum and your going to learn all ya want/need too;) Im a real newbie myself here, but not really to chickens................ just to 'city' chickens. I really didnt realize there would be a difference but for me there has been... I LOVE my chickens and hope you have as much fun as all of us here do... WELCOME :)

from Michigan. At first there a lot to do. But once they get a little older and you don't worry as much it gets much easier. Good luck they are fun. The best way to relax is sitting outside with a glass of ice tea and watching the chickens in the yard. It's the best.

Hi there! I also got chickens in part for the kids, so they'd be a little more grounded about where food comes from. We let one of our hens go broody and gave her some fertile eggs. It was so wonderful watching her incubate the eggs and mother the chicks! We then raised some chicks in a brooder inside. I think you're doing a great thing for your kids, exposing them to chickens! They have so much personality. I think it's good for kids to be around "livestock" animals, see them grow, and then see and eat the eggs from them! They get a lot out of it. My preschooler plays all the time with the chickens!

Good luck with you SLW - they're beautiful birds!
