My name is Heather and i'm new to the whole chicken thing. I enjoy all types of animals and currently manage my local animal shelter in the suburbs of Jersey. From time to time our shelter will get in a "stray" chicken or rooster and they have always been interesting to me so i decided to take the step and get 2 for my yard. I've learned a lot from friends who have owned them for many years and i love having them. I have 2 rhode island red hens. I purchased the 1st one about 2 months ago from a local farm. She was, well is, great. She's healthy and laying perfect eggs. 2 weeks after i purchased her, i returned to the same farm and bought 2 more. I am told they are all about 1 yr old. as soon as i got the 2 home i noticed cough, spitting up water and a bronchitis like cough. it was a sunday so i needed to wait till monday morning to get them to my vet. monday morning 1 had already died and the other sounded worse. i brought her to the vet where he gave her 2 injections and was on a 10 day treatment of oral Orbax. she totally recovered but took her a few weeks to start laying. she has been laying for 2 weeks now but the eggs are very pale in color and round. Everything i read about these egg problems says "infectious bronchitis" as the reason but she is fine now. Is this just a residual effect of her illness or does she still have an illness? She is happy, displays no signs of illness, eats like a pig and is very social. The original hen never got sick and is perfect. I would appreciate any of your thoughts or suggestions. Thank you- Heather
