Hi, Im Gully with 3 brahma bantams hens,

Anytime Iv googled chickens this website came up so here I am!

I got my hens as chicks less then 6 months ago with a small cage with attached housing that the salesman told me 3 chickens would be comfortable in! Well about 3 months later as they got bigger I felt bad for them and got a 10x10x10 fence kennel that seems more appropriate for them. I took the housing off of the old cage and placed it in the kennel on two pallets, My hens don't really use the housing but prefer to sleep on top the roof at night.

Anyways...about a week ago I started letting my hens venture out in the fenced in back yard. I have two dogs a little chiweenie and a English pointer. I watched them closely to make sure everyone would behave and get along. They all seemed ok together so far. Sunday I had the chickens out with my pointer that I was certain wouldn't harm the chickens I even thought she would protect them if need be from any hawks or eagles. (I live in Florida). I went inside for 15 minutes and heard the chickens clucking a lot and came out to find the dog had got one of them. Pulled some back feathers out that skin came with it. Yesterday morning took her to the vet (hard to find a vet that looks after chickens but found one town north of me). They washed her up, trimmed around her wound and injected her with dexamethasone & baytril. Sent us home with oral antibiotics twice a day, chlorhexadine scrub 2 a day and vetericyn gel spray 2 a day. Today she seems to be doing a little bit better but she seems to not be eating and drinking. Im having a hard time getting the antibiotics syringe in her mouth. She will peck at freeze dried meal worms but I haven seen her eat any. I have her placed inside so she can recover away from the two other hens and the flies.

God I feel awful about what happened to this hen. I should of been more careful.

Any advice on how to give her her antibiotics and water would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock!

When my chickens aren't eating or drinking, I usually feed them in a dropper. With grain, I ground it up, added some water, and poured some down their throat. The chickens didn't like it, but it kept them alive. I hope this helps. Good luck with her!

Hi Gully. Can you entice her with live mealworms? I would imagine they are more interesting to an ill bird than dried ones. You may get her to take in fluids by giving her some nice ripe watermelon, or adding a bit of sugar to water. Sometimes a bird will take in finely mashed hard boiled egg folk, moistened with a little water or plain yogurt.
I've heard warm cooked oatmeal can be very appealing as well.

Thank you everyone for the helpful feedback!

Last night when I had giving her antibiotics I managed to squirt some water in her beak. Then I went to pet supermarket and got them live mealworms! Mean little suckers they are! With all the wiggling my hen gulped down about 5 of them!!!

This morning she ate a few more and when I moved her water close to her she drank ALOT! She seems to be doing better and has become more vocal as well.

Now she's not walking as of yet. When the vet looked at her she said one of her legs has nerve damage but when swelling goes down it my be better if not she may drag that leg. Ill feel a lot better when she starts walking, (I'm sure she well too). But now i am so relived she's drinking, eating and talking!

This is a pic of them the day before all this happened

Thanks again everyone! I'm really enjoying this site learning a lot and making new friends
