Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad to have you aboard. Chickens are canibals when it comes to blood. Once it has been drawn, chickens that were otherwise very nice will peck non stop at the wound causing more blood which causes more pecking until they kill. I agree with 1muttsfan, any affect birds should be separted out for their own safety. Good luck. :thumbsup

I think it is more likely that you have some dominance issues since the rooster left. Once the hens develop a red area or a sore, the others will pick at it unmercifully. You must separate these hens and treat the affected areas. I like to use Blu Kote, as it covers the affected area and removes the red color, and is distasteful when picked. These hens should be in a cage or small pen (individually) until the sores heal, then have Blu Kote applied until the feathers grow back. Good luck.
