My name is Mo (nickname that stuck with me since childhood) and I live in Missouri with my husband, my son (graduating HS this May then off to college), 3 dogs, 3 cats and whatever rescue I happen to have at the time. My 2 girls are already out on their own so what's a mom to do when faced with the last chick leaving the nest...... get new ones right??

I have been reading/learning for the last few weeks and just got my first chicks tonight. We decided on Golden Laced Wyondotettes, Partridge Cochins and 2 silkies. Research gave us our direction breed wise, but the feed store got final say based on what stock they had on hand as well as our not wanting to wait a month for special ordering. We got the breeds we wanted if not the exact colors.

I'm sure I will have tons of questions (like what is up with the poopy butts???) but for now think Im off to a fine start. Thanks for being here so we are not starting alone.

Those poopy butts (AKA pasty butts) need to be gently cleaned off with warm water, or the chick can become obstructed.

Thanks..I did that with a warm, wet paper towel once I got them home then worried about getting the poor things too wet. Figured wet was better than stuck. Do they get that way often? Can it be prevented?

Hi

you can put apple cider vinegar in their water tbsp. per gallon ... it really does the trick, make sure you keep them warm enough and if that doesn't help you can change the brand of starter mix ... good luck and if you need help just let someone know ... lots of info here ...
