Hi everyone I'm a 21 year old guy I'm a cook for a living. I just got myself 8 buff orpington 4 week old chicks straight run. There not hatchery birds there off a farm near me. There in my furnace room in a tote under heat lamp and when there fully feathered ill let them out to the coop and run I built. Sadly I bought medicated 50 pound starter feed but I'm to cheap to not use it. I let them outside everyday for a hour or so if its warm and nice and they love it and gives some bonding time get them use to me and being picked up. My dad had chickens when he was younger but he was old school with chickens like cracked corn and water is what they need. I'm trying to treat my girls well and get max egg production. Ummm anyway hi if you have any advice or anything I'm up for it thanks

from Indiana!

Also, why on Earth would you not use medicated starter? I'm still pretty new to chickens myself, but that's what I feed my chickies, and that's what most people feed their chicks. At least, most on here do too. I'm not well versed in the controversy of it, mostly because I've had no problems myself, but I do know that it helps to prevent coccoidosis (sp?), which is a really nasty disease chickens are susceptible to.

Chickens definately need a lot more than cracked corn to be healthy, and definately much more to get optimal egg producton. Once they get old enough (by the time they finish off that feed bag ought to do it!) Start feeding them layer chicken feed, and give them ground oyster shells. Chickens also need fresh produce to be healthy. They like, and will eat, nearly everything. There is a good post on here about what "treats" to not give chickens. I can't seem to locate it, or I would post the link. The only things I know for sure to not give chickens are avocados and citrus fruit. But be sure, as soon as you start giving anything other than chicken feed, to give them grit to eat.
