Well, one thought, since you only want a very few chicks, is that you get them sooner than later, because you can get them from feed stores right now, but they will soon not carry them any longer for the season. At least, that's how it works in my area.

Mail order is nice, but rather pricey if you are only getting a few birds, as most expect you to order a minimum. The place I order from has a 25 chick minimum, for example.

There's also private sale, of course. Do you have a thought on where you will get yours from?

Have you studied the breeds, as yet, and made a list of what characteristics are important to you? For example, do you want a lot of eggs? Do you have a preference when it comes to egg color?

I get my food from the feed store, as well as bedding for the coop.

Most other supplies, such as wire, lights etc., come from the hardware store.

When you asked what you'd need, does that also mean for the run? If so, I would recommend hardware cloth, the hard wire with small squares for holes. I've never found chicken wire adequate for keeping predators away from the birds. A top on the run might also be warranted.

Good luck!

We are actually getting them from a guy that lives 15 minutes away so instead of mail order i'm guessing we can just go and pick them up!!!

I would prefer brown, but thats just me.

I might go out and get new pictures of the coop all fixed up. Man it was like a rat hole inside. i found matted down hay and when i pulled my rake through it, a HUGE cloud of dust sprang up

BTW we are thinking of getting 6-7 chicks
