That was original, eh? lol. But I am - new here, although not new to chickens. I've been keeping chickens for a little over ten years now and can't imagine not having them and their fresh eggs. I also keep ducks and geese. And I have some bantam chickens too. I live in southern California on a mini-ranch and raise dairy goats as well.

I've known about BYC for a long time - glad to be here finally! :)

! Pleased you joined us! Glad you took the plunge! Good luck to you and your birds!

Welcome to BYC!

I'm sure that your knowledge will be welcome. I'd like to know something about goats. My wife has suggested that we get one to keep down the grass on the wilder part of our home land. I would worry about plants on the well kept garden area and the veg. patch. Also, goats milk would be useful but how would I know that it was safe to drink?

I have read that you never have just one goat unless it's a pet and can keep it close. I believe that Vet's can check your goats/milk for anything harmful. Also you can go to backyardherds.com for help. :)

Edit: Also welcome to BYC, ravensnest! Any info you can give to others is very appreciated. :)

Thanks for that.

The proposition from Mrs Thaiturkey is that we have just one as a pet and grass cutter. I'll ask the local vet about testing milk. They don't do quite the same job here as in the West.

Thanks for the welcome! :) It's been a long time since I've been on a poultry forum, but browsing around earlier today I realized that I could make connections with others and trade ideas and insights and perhaps help newbies too. :) See ya round the hen house!

Hi! Thanks for the welcome! I hope I can be of some help sometimes!
Goats are wonderful! I don't know much about the plants in Thailand but you'd want to be careful about toxic plants that might be growing on your property, and you'll need to fence off what you don't want them to eat, because they are more likely to dine on your rose bushes than your weeds! :O And they really do need a buddy or you'll have one loud and unhappy goat!

I could talk all day about goats, but since this is a poultry forum, I won't, lol. Here is a website however, that is fantastic for goat info - it is the most comprehensive and best organized site I've found and I agree with most all of Molly's management protocols: http://fiascofarm.com/goats/ If you'd like a yahoo group recommendation, goats101 is a very helpful yahoo group. Good luck!
