Hi, I'm new to this site but I've recently bought two silkie bantam hens, one white and one partridge - their beautiful. I'm interested in getting more, but I don't know whether to get a silkie rooster or not (I'm a bit nervous buying a rooster). Can anybody educate me a bit more on them? Are they as loud as normal roosters? My two silkies have their own coop with an attached 6 foot pen, and I would love to start showing them next year :D any advice or help would be much appreciated, I have thought about buying a small incubator or buying fertilised eggs instead of getting a rooster, what would everyone recommend? Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to BYC!

I've not had Silkies but a lot of members do, they are popular. If you do a search on them, I'm sure you'll find a lot of posts. Your birds are nice looking, thanks for sharing the photos.

Nice to have you here!

glad you have joined us. Your silkie hens are gorgeous.

No personal experience with silkies or roosters, but most recommend a ratio of 1 roo per 8-10 hens.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. You may want to ask on the "Silkie thread," There are several dedicated Silkie threads among them "Buff Silkies, "Paint Silkies," "Nothing but Partridge Silkies," etc. Have you ever seen the silkie variety called "Showgirls?"

Silkies are among the top broody mamas. So you may not need an incubator at all.

Thank you! No I have never heard of that variety I will definitely look into it, thank you for the advice, I think I may just buy fertilised eggs then!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Our Silkie roosters typically been among our quieter roosters, but they are still noisy. There is just no such thing as a quite rooster; all of them will crow. If you're concerned about a cranky neighbor complaining, then I would forget getting a rooster. If you do decide to get a rooster, sunflour is right; the recommended ratio is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Silkies.
