HI, interested in chickens.

LOL Perhaps I should first explain my username- I have a hairless Chinese Crested dog.

Im thinking of getting some chickens in a year or two. I'd like a handful of them mostly as pets, and some eggs for the family.

Any tips would be appreciated.

My advice? Be prepared! As in prepared for the chicken addiction!! IHonestly, I recommend making sure that the area where your chickens will be is safe from predators!!

I live in NE Ohio.

I have plans to install a chainlink fence around most of my property before getting chickens too.. mostly for my child and dog to enjoy the yard, but also to help keep the chickens safe.. that should prevent most potential predators. My dog has no prey drive, and goes outside supervised anyways, so he's not a danger to the chickens either.

There is someone on my road that has chickens.. I often see them near the side of the road.. seems the worst predator for them is the car, as I ussually see at least one dead chicken on the road every summer too

I will keep in mine to build a large coop. Since it gets cold where I live, do I need to do anything in particular? Or do chickens acclimate pretty well?

the chicken thing is much easier than I thought it would be. When I first started out with chicks, I was very worried about their temperature...checking it, adjusting etc.I relaxed after a while and realized that while little chicks are very fragile, they are more resilient than I was giving them credit for.
As adults, chickens are super fun. I let them out of their run into the back yard for an hour or two to eat the lawn and explore. They love it. The rest of the time they spend in their run and at night they just go into their coop. Very easy.
