(1) Are you new to chickens? In the past we've raised ducks and of course, once we had our system perfected, we moved and lost the whole 'duck setup' so we have decided that this year we are going to try a small run of chickens this year instead.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? None as of right now, but I'm thinking maybe six hens this Spring.
(3) What breeds do you have? Still deciding....
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I'll let you know when I figure that out! With ducks it was the weekly duck derby's when we'd throw treats (night crawlers) and watch the ducks raise around to get them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Reading, canning, crocheting, camping and hiking.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have 1 dog and 2 cats. We've been on our new property for just under two years and feel like we *almost* have a handle on things like water drainage (or lack there of), how the sun falls, where to plant what... and now we think we are ready to start adding some chickens!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I came across BYC accidentally and have been lurking here for quite a while. When I found myself intentionally coming back to look for answers to questions I figured it was time to join up!
I really am hoping to find out some practical ins and outs of raising chickens. I love reading about what has worked for others as well as what hasn't worked--best to learn from others mistakes as often as I can, it's much less costly that way!!
We'll be converting an oddly placed covered patio into our chicken coop--heck, if we already have the roof and floor in place, might as well use it! So send any and all advice you have from coop building to everyday chicken life my way, thank you in advance!
