Just starting raising ducks, I got three mallards last year and just have one lone one of them now, Freckles who follows me all over the yard. We lost her mate suddenly just before Christmas, and she had another friend that wouldn't stop flying, even though I clipped her wings, and flew out in the road one too many times. Freckles I know has trouble seeing in one of her eyes, I nursed her from an injury last fall, but she seems like a happy duck and I have a mirror in her pen until she gets some friends. We spend a bit of time with her, though she is an outside duck. I decided to order some ducklings for the first time this year and have some 10 day olds in the brooder right now. Plan to try hatching my own as well. I like ducks, they suit me, and I love eating and using duck eggs. I don't care for the taste of duck, however, and consider them to be egg giving pets. I grew up around birds and it was something I wanted to get into myself, circumstances being what they were never came to pass. I live in the country, and neighbors aren't a problem. I don't have any other animals but cats, not sure I want them or not, but I do have some children who run wild all over the place.
