Hatching
Hi. I'm a new member and thrilled to be here. I've been lurking for awhile. My girls are Gigi, an Americauna, Mimi, a Silver Lace Wyandotte and Coco, a Coco Maran -- who will be 1 year old in May.
I have a question -- many really -- but one pressing issue right now. Mimi has always had a funny gait. When we brought her home at 2 months old I noticed she didn't run like the others, but hopped. We thought it was a cute quirk. Since then the hop has slowly turned into an irregular gait and finally a pronounced hobble. I took her to an avian vet two different times and he found nothing wrong. He suggested radiographs and blood work which we did this week. Her white bc was slightly elevated and she has a deformed vertebrae in her spine -- shaped triangular and flat. She also has severe degeratice arthritis in her left knee. She's been prescribed Rovera (Carpofen) an anti-imflammatory. We got a 2nd opinion and the other dr also an avian specialist agreed with the treatment. They both feel like whatever is the cause has been going on for a while so they don't think it's a new infection and decided not to give an antibiotic. Despite her limp, Mimi is my best layer. She gives a beautiful delicious pink egg everyday! Without fail. She seems happy. She still eats well and makes her way around the backyard. She isn't picked on by the other girls and hops up on her roost, and a picnic table. I've been giving her warm Epsom salts soaks which she seems to love. Today I am starting her on the meds. I hope it helps. Does anyone know if it's still safe for us to eat her eggs? She will be taking Rovera 25mg tabs to be administered ¾ of a tab 2x daily. Thanks!
