Hi my names Beverly I am 33 years old and live in Northern Michigan. I have a 12 year old daughter and a boyfriend Ive been with for 11 years. We have 22 acres of farmland we dont really farm it for anything but growing rye to feed the deer in our harsh winters. Over the years we have added more members to our family the furry or feathery ones anyways. We have a female Pomerianion/rat terrior mix shes the color of a red fox, we have 2 males poms/rat terrior ones the dad and ones their 2 year old son, then my daughter got a hamster, and now a 9 week old kitten, then we decided after every spring getting chickens this year when my boyfriend said lets get some I went down that day and got them before he changed his mind. My daughter and her best friend fell in love with the ducks as well so we ended up getting 2 ducks and 8 chickens which is all very new to me. After having them for a few weeks and researching and reading lots of information. We went and got 14 more chicks and 4 more ducks. Ive had 5 come up missing without a sign or trace, and the neighbors cat got my favorite duck and only Indian Runner we had, and one of our barred rock. I have one more barred rock, 5 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Jersey giants, 2 white not sure what they are, a red and blonde buff orphingtons, 2 bantams still trying to find out which breed they are as they are beautiful and we plan to add more next spring, and a couple other chickens Im not sure what they are. I have found a few breeds in reading that we plan to add to our flock next year. I have 3 Rouen ducks, and 2 Perkin (they were supposed to have been Indian Runners.) Then the last addition to the family to keep the cats away from my birds we added a Australian Blue Healer.

Welcome to BYC, Beverly! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Wow! Sounds like you have a lot of animals on your hands! I bet you are kept busy! LOL But who could get tired of caring for pets, right!? I'm glad you are having fun with them all and have given them all such a happy home. I love the easter egger hen in your avatar. So pretty! I have an EE too. Their blue/green eggs are sure pretty, aren't they?

Glad you joined our community. Feel free to ask any questions.

Nice to meet you Bev, you may want to post on the predator threads for information on beefing up your coop/runs. I hope your blue heeler is working out, they can be excellent at keeping critters away. If your pom/rat terrier is not tiny, I would think it would do a good job of sending cats away also.

I am new to having chickens I just got them in March and so far none have laid eggs yet. I'm excited they are all so much fun i spend lots of time through out the day and evening with them word of advice don't leave your slider opened my red and blonde buff orphingtons will come in and visit us and my ducks we plan on adding more we have a huge natural pond we dug and let fill in on its own. Id run an animal rescue if I could but my boyfriend doesn't like that many animals as far as dogs and cats. The Easter egg layer in that picture isn't mine but mine looks a lot like it. I posted some pics of hens in their coop we got 2 Easter egg layers my daughter was excited about the colored eggs one was showing signs of being a rooster but he was one that we assume a hawks have got. I'm not even sure my breeds are what we were told they were I have a pair of bantam I posted pic off whatever kind they turned out to be we defiantly want more. We bought them at a new Home and Farm store they built a year ago. Ive been researching and saving pictures of different breed we want to add to our mixed flock. My pom/rat terriers are little dogs my females 10lbs (well 20+ now but shes due to have a litter of pups with in a few weeks.) My male has a damaged back nerves from an accident and both are protective but we have a high predator area where Im at with foxes, coyotes lat week we had a full grown bald eagle sitting on the edge of our field my daughter and I went and put my chicks in their run. I am glad we decided everyday to get the chickens.
