HI,

My name is Fodie, my husband Adam and I live on a 5 acre farm and would like to add a few chicks to our family. We have 4 wonderful kids ages 2, 3, 4 and 7. They are all very excited to get chicks. I need help starting out, need to know where to get my chicks and how many. I would like to have at least a dozen eggs a week when they start laying. Also they would need to be as friendly as possible. I hear easter eggers and buff orphingtons are a good start. I live in NE iowa and would also love any offers for chicks we could purchase from you. Thanks

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

Wish you lived closer, I have chicks coming out my ears. I would recommend at least a half dozen hens, that will give you a few extra in case you loose some, and for times of year when the hens lay fewer eggs. You can always sell or give away extra eggs.

We have sex links. Fantastic egg layers. you would only need two to get a dozen eggs a week.
Buff orps are probably the best though, they're good with kids... friendly, and also good layers. I love your avatar! :)

from Ohio!

Both Easter Eggers and Buff Orpingtons are great chickens. Our EEs lay beautiful green, mint green, aqua and olive green eggs, are inquisitive, forage well and have fun personalities. Our Buff Orpingtons are sweet, busy fuzzy butts, and great mamas. Both are consistent layers.
