We have coyote, fox, hawks and all sorts of predators. So we do not let the chickens out free in the yard. I have a coop for night time and a 10 X12 run for daytime. It had grass but they ate it all. I tried pine shavings but I didn't like that. So now I have changed to sand. They like to scratch and dig in it. Worms seem to like it much to their demise. I still put pine shavings in their nesting boxes. but entire run is now sand. we buried some of the chicken wire and put a garden around 3 sides and river rock around the last. Hope that keeps everything out. The chickens make enough noise that the deer didn't eat our garden this year. Now we have eggs, tomatoes and cucumbers EVERYWHERE. lol
