(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Actually, I have a duckling. I got her/him on Wednesday 5/15/13. She walked into my repair shop at work - minus her family. My hubby walked around looking for a family of ducks, but, didn't find any. So, he brought her home. We think it's a female because she's so talkative. :) I wasn't home when he got home or I would've gone out right away and purchased a heat lamp. By the time I got home, it was too late to do it; the store had closed. So, we slept with her that night to keep her warm. Of course, she imprinted on me and now I'm a Duck Mommy. ;)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Just one duckling.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I believe she's a mallard.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I found you through an internet search on how to care for ducklings.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm a runner, but, a fairly new runner. I started running in the late summer / early fall 2012. And now I'm scheduled to run my first half marathon in Ontario, CA - at Niagra Falls on 6/2. I also read. A lot. I really should start listening to audio books when I run. But, I haven't gotten that far yet. I still love listening to music when I'm running. ;)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Okay, so yeah - RacerWife7: my hubby drives a racecar, but it's a hobby. We both work together at his family's auto parts store and repair shop. We have 2 sons. One is nearly 13 (and acts like it - lol) and our younger son is 8 and is a type 1 diabetic.

I am an animal lover; have been all my life. I grew up with them and will probably always have pets around me. <3 We have an 11-year old yellow lab named Daisy. She's the sweetest dog imaginable, but MUCH too interested in baby Peepers (my 8 year old named the duckling. :) ) We live with my Mother-In-Law, as well. And she has a cat who is the strangest cat I've ever met. She drinks from faucets ONLY, relaxes in the sink, and only lets certain people pet her. You would think one of those people would be my Mother-In-Law. But, no. I'm one of the few. (animal lover... I told you! Somehow, they always know!)

So, Peepers is the newest member of our family. And she's very attached to me. I bring her to work with me every day in a box. But, pretty soon, she's going to be too big for the box! She's growing fast. The one thing I have a hard time with is food. She is not crazy about the non-medicated chick starter I got her. She LOVES the shrimp-based hermit crab food we gave her the first day (again - desperation because the poor thing was hungry and that was all we had). She LOVES it, though. They're teeny-tiny round things and the main ingredient is shrimp. So, I know she's getting protein! But, I am only giving her a little bit mixed into the chick starter right now. She fishes every single little piece out and leaves most of the chick starter (not to mention the chick starter that she plasters to the walls - you know what kind of messy eaters ducks are! HAHA! :) Hard to keep up with the poop machine, too. LOL! ...Still. I'm in love with her. She's so sweet. <3 Here she is:

Greetings from Kansas, RacerWife7, and

! Great to have you with us! Have fun with your single duckling (going to add to the flock so Peepers has a playmate?). Good luck with your running - that half marathon is a quite an achievement!!

Hi redsoxs! Thanks! BTW, I'm from NJ.

I didn't mention that, did I? As for the flock question: I don't know yet. Owning chickens and ducks is a huge deal in my town (drives me nuts, to be honest - otherwise, I would already be a chicken-Mom!). Right now, I have a mirror for her in her 'house' so that when I'm not around, there's 'someone else' there. She's funny with it, too. She will go look in the mirror, then run away from it. Then, run back to look in it again.

LOL! Makes me laugh. Here she is playing with the beads on the mirror:

I don't know anything about ducks except they are adorable. I hoped(after reading the previous posts) that someone would have addressed the feeding issues. If you go to the section "Other Backyard Poultry" that includes, ducks, geese etc. please post your inquiry about feeding ducks. Maybe specific duck food would be more palatable for her. I know ducks need a lot of water around to eat dry foods. And they love a little pool to swim in. I bet she imprinted on you in a not so pleasant way (duck poo) when she was sleeping with you.

You sound like a very good duck parent.

Thanks, everyone!! ...drumstick diva: YES. She, definitely, imprinted on me "that way" that night.

LOLOL!!!! Thankfully, just on the shoulder of my t-shirt; easily washable. How kind of her, huh??
