Hi, Backyard Chickens! I have been reading and learning from you guys for several months now, as I've been raising my first-ever flock. I joined today because I have a question that I couldn't answer just by reading. I need you guys' help! I posted it over in a thread called "Don't know what breed or gender you have?" But to introduce myself:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes, I am new to chickens! We got our first chicks in March. We live on 80 acres of fields and forests, and thought it would be a nicer place with some pretty little hens clucking around and sharing their nice eggs with us.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We have 11 chickens and 12 guinea keets.
(3) What breeds do you have? Two Isa Browns, two white leghorns, two aracaunas, two americaunas, two black marans, and one light brahma, all supposedly hens, but I am suspicious of two of them as being possible roosters. We also have a group of 4-week-old guinea fowl, which are being raised for free-range on the property to help control a growing tick population.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? This is the site that pops up with answers every time I google something I need to learn about taking care of my ladies. You guys are a great resource!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I am an avid vegetable gardener, and a struggling flower gardener. I also love to cook and bake and read. I sing in a large chorus, and mostly ... mostly I drive my mini-van. I drive it a lot.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am an at-home mom of two teens and a tween. They are all busy with school, music, and sports, and that's why I drive so much. We have all those outdoor birds mentioned above, plus two small floofy dogs (the beating hearts of our family - so much beloved!), and four silly, sweet guinea pigs.
