Hi. I just come across this forum while looking for help with my clutch I'm trying to hatch. This is our first time having chickens.
My mom decided to buy a bunch of pullets and one silky bantam. These are about 6 months, roughly. The rooster started trying to crow about 6 weeks ago and is getting his tail feathers in. We were also given three white crested black Polish that were already of age, the two hens laying already.
So currently we have 15 chickens. One a developed rooster and at least one other that is adolescent. The 12 younger ones are about the same age, and I was told that if there were any more roosters they would have started crowing about the time the other did. So I suppose that's a good ratio of hen to rooster?
Anyway, I hope to meet Some great people and Learn more about the little critters lol they have grown on me. I even try to make sure to pick up and hold at least one every time I go to feed and water. Lol.
Anyway, nice to meet everyone!

It is great having you here!

Some breeds do start crowing later. It sounds like yours is an early crowing breed though

Thank you! And I'm not sure what breed they are lol the rooster looks like he's going to be full red/dark brown with green tail feathers. The other four that I suspected are red with dappled whites coming in. We've got three that is dappled black white and gray. Two black ones, one with gold dappled around the neck and the other with greenish tint in the feathers. And one gold one that I suspect will be the most likely to be broody. She gave me a funny look the other day when I took the Polish eggs and cackled at me lol

:frow Welcome from New Orleans, lots of knowledgable, non judgemental people here who are happy to help in any way they can, glad you feel like you can jump in and ask questions already. Please make yourself at home. I have had cockerels of the same age and breed who began crowing at different times, like weeks apart. So don't take the lack of crowing as proof that you have pullets. Good luck I hope most if not all your birds are pullets if that's what you want. Hope you enjoy this site. May I ask where in Mississippi you are?
