Hi, I'm, a new member here but I have been reading this site for a few months now. I have 3 8 week old chicks. 2 barred rocks and 1 gold sex link. I am having a problem with my gold girl. She is breathing with her mouth open. I just moved my birds out to their permanent outside home 5 days ago. I have read that when a chick is breathing with her mouth open that it means something is wrong.... so what is wrong? I checked the water, feed, grit.. it all seems fine. The other 2 birds are fine.

Welcome to BYC!

Gapeworm is not that common especially in 8 week old babies. Is it warm where you are located? They could be over heating. Chicks can not regulate their temps really well yet. If it is hot where you are, she could be over heating.

Stress will make them breathe thru their mouths. If they are stressed from the move and hot, this will cause them to pant. Is she holding her wings out as well?

Any more info you can tell us about your temps, coop size, poop consistency? Anything else?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 what TwoCrows said, check the chick over really well, and watch how is she acting otherwise, is she eating, drinking and running around like the others, or what is she doing?

It's in the upper 90s here, but really windy, so it doesn't feel as hot as it actually is (at least to me it doesn't) I'm in Northern OK. She was acting normal, eyes clear, playing with the others, jumping around with her wings out. I picked her up and she seemed fine other than her mouth being open.. I put extra grit right in front of her, thinking she was having trouble with something she was eating in the yard, 30 minutes later she went back out in the run and her mouth was closed... so I think she is fine... ? My coop is my avatar. It's a pretty good size for the 3 of them.

Thank you for your responses :) These are my first chickens so I know I will be coming back a lot with questions. I want them to be healthy and happy.
