Hi- New to BYC. Have had my chickens since March. 2 each of RIR, Black Sexlink and leghorn. I love each one of them and have enjoyed them so much. They are all good layers too. Beautiful eggs! I'm obscessed with the cold temps. This morning temps were -1 degrees. The coop was around 15 degrees. They seemed fine . I'm anxious to figure out this site and learn a lot from all of you!

You must be near the coast to be so warm this morning. We hit -10F and currently it's a balmy -8. The hardest part with the cold snaps is keeping the water from freezing. We've a heated water fount and It started to ice over in the hour after I put it out and plugged it in.

The big thing with winter is to keep the wind off the birds. I use a tarp to wrap the two sides of prevailing winter wind, my birds come outside every day except those few -30F mornings we'll get they stay in the coop all morning so I throw handfuls of black oil sunflower seed in with them for quick high fat energy.
